Student Discounts In and Around Austin

For students, Austin offers a wide variety of activities to explore outside the classroom and a student ID card can help make that exploring more affordable. While some discount cards charge a fee, a regular student ID is enough for a discount at many Austin establishments. Discounts can be found in a variety of categories, including movies, fine arts, museums, and even dining. Student outdoor and fitness enthusiasts can also enjoy discounts around town.

Movies can be a nice quick escape from the toil of studying. A number of Austin movie theatres provide student discounts. Barton Creek Square and Galaxy Highland 10 each offer $6 student admission. Dobie Theatre Landmark also offers $6 student admission, but only Monday through Thursday. Westgate 11 beats them all, charging only $5.75 for students. When really pressed for time, why not enjoy both dinner and a movie at any of the three Austin area Alamo Drafthouse theatre locations. Student prices are offered for many of the Alamo's regular screenings and even some special events. Student admission prices vary depending on the location and film, but can be as low as $5.50.

Austin's performing arts scene has a lot to offer students, even those on a tight budget. The Austin Symphony's normal single ticket prices may start at $19, but students with a college ID receive $2 off the regular ticket price. In addition, a limited number of $5 student rush tickets may be sold to the Classical Concert series, at the box office's discretion. Twenty minutes before each concert begins, tickets are sold based on availability at a special window marked "Student Rush." The Austin Ballet also offers a limited number of $10 student rush tickets for each performance. Students should arrive at the box office one hour before the performance is scheduled to begin.

Several of Austin's dramatic companies and theatres also offer student discounts. The Zachary Scott Theatre Center provides students $2 off of regular single ticket prices and $10 off of most ticket subscriptions. Discounted student admission is also available for many of the performances at the Hyde Park Theatre. Call or visit the theatre's website (http://www.hydeparktheatre.org/) for information about a specific show or performance. For some comedy to balance out the drama, Esther's Follies, offers students $2 off the regular ticket price of $18.

For fine arts, students receive $1 off of the regular $5 admission price to both the Mexic-Arte Museum and the downtown location of the Austin Museum of Art. The Mexic-Arte Museum focuses on Latino art, while the Austin Museum of Art hosts exhibits in a wide variety of mediums, themes, and styles. The Austin Museum of Art also offers a 25% student discount on memberships, which in turn gives members discounts on the museum's many art classes.

Students interested in learning martial arts can receive a $10 discount on monthly dues, regularly $100, at the not-for-profit Aikido of Austin dojo. The Austin Rock Gym's two locations offer local student rock climbers a number of discounts off both day passes and memberships. Discounts range from $2 off the day pass price of $13 up to $20 off the regular price of $149 for a 3-month membership.

Students who practice yoga or would like to learn have a number of discount options available. Students receive a 20% discount on all class passes at any of the three Austin area Yoga Yoga studios. Students with ID can also take advantage of $10 classes at Bodhi Yoga, Bikram Yoga Austin at Yogagroove, and Yoga Vida. Additionally, both Bodhi Yoga and Bikram Yoga Austin offer varying discounts off of their multiple-class rates.

Some of Austin's outdoor attractions and activities also offer student discounts. Austin Duck Adventures gives students $2 off the regular $16 cost of their unique guided tours of Austin aboard amphibious buses. On a nice day, consider picnicking at either the Austin Zoo or the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, both of which offer a $1 discount off the regular admission price of $5. Or take advantage of the shade at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, where students pay only $1 for admission, rather than the general fee of $3.50.

Considering the wide variety of other discounts available, student deals for dining off campus are surprisingly few and far between. One exception, located not far from the University of Texas campus and serving burgers, pizza, and salads, EZ's does offer students $2 off of any meal over $8.

Discounts are even available to students at some Austin retailers and service businesses. Students receive 10% off all regularly priced merchandise at Asel Art Supply. Computer NERDZ offers students $10 off their normal rate of $79 per hour for computer services.

All discounts are subject to change, so be sure to call or check online for the latest information. Since student discounts are available in some unlikely places, if your favorite venue or establishment isn't listed here, don't hesitate to ask during your next visit. And don't leave home without your student ID.
