Notes on Breakout Principle by Herbert Benson and William Proctor

  1. a breakout begins with your natural power to maximize health, mental ability, and physical performance
  2. the same mind/body mechanism operates in every breakout trigger
  3. as a breakout begins, your body and mind move through a series of distinct, identifiable stages
    1. a hard mental or physical struggle
      1. death of a spouse
      2. divorce
      3. marital separation
      4. jail term
      5. death of a close family member
    2. pulling the breakout trigger (must completely sever prior thought and emotional patterns)
    3. breakout proper (coupled with a peak experience)
    4. return to a new normal state (including ongoing improved performance and mind/body patterns)
  4. activating the trigger appears to cause your body to release puffs of nitrous oxide (a response that counters stress hormones that can impede a breakout)
